I was terrified. My hotel breakfast was starting to come back. I looked across at the other two, but their lifeless expressions gave me no hope. ‘I can’t go through with this’, I told myself. My worst fears staring back at me. I try to focus on the red velvet drapes in front of me but to no avail. ‘Get a grip on yourself !’ my mind shouted. I couldn’t breathe. I felt like somebody had punched me in the gut and was trying to drown me. “Positions everybody”, it was about to get even worse. “We’re going in 5, 4..” my brain melted, my knees became jello. “3, 2….” it’s all happening and there’s nothing I can do to back out. “1…..” my life flashed before my eyes.
“This is… Jeopardy.”
“Contestants standing by”, I heard through the radio mic as the music played. I could taste the breakfast buffet now, sausages and all. My pale, green face couldn’t hide behind that grimacing smile any longer. The other two now looking over at me with concern.
“And here’s your host, Alexxxxxx Trebek”
The stagehand asked “are you Ok there ?” I froze. I couldn’t take it. I did something that nobody in the history of Jeopardy has ever done. The very thing that would make television history, and not in a good way.
“Our first contestant, a software engineer from Bellevue Nebraska…”
And before Alex could say my name, it happened.
